Logitech G502 “Proteus Core” is probably one of the best all-purpose high-end gaming mouse on the market right now. It’s not just a leader of it’s own class between Logitech mice, but it is also pretty damn competitive in the whole gaming mice industry. It may be suitable to say that Logitech G502 Proteus Core is well known by it’s opponents on the market.
Before starting off, i would like you to check out some articles which will provide you enough information about gaming mice. After reading them you will see the devil in details about gaming mice. Check them out:
Before our Logitech G502 review gets deeper let’s start with the history of Logitech G502 Proteus Core. Where did this multi-purpose gaming mouse come from? It is actually the grandson of a legendary multi-purpose gaming mouse of previous generation which still continues it’s legacy – !!Logitech G500!! Logitech G500 was very well known (which still is) for it’s multi-purpose features like DPI-switching, adjustable weight, high quality optical sensor, ergonomics and other stuff…
Logitech G500 was the award-winner grade previous successor as an all purpose gaming mouse of Logitech. It really is one of my favourite gaming mice. But I can see that Logitech wanted to take their masterpiece to next level and modernize it. I think that’s how Logitech G502 Proteus Core was born. They both are great and i can confidently state that, in my opinion, they’re one of the best gaming mice yet.
But don’t think that Logitech G500 has given up everything and left the ring to his grandson. Logitech G500 is still one of the most preferred gaming mice by many people, especially hardcore gamers. It was the inspiration source for Logitech G502, which are quite easy to find their similarities. To check out what Logitech G500 is about, read our Logitech G500 review:
Enough chit chat, let’s talk start to our Logitech G502 Review
Why They Call It “Core”?
Now you may wonder why this gaming mouse is called “core”. This is a comparison referanced to core of the Earth which is composed of high density metal. Just like the core of earth, Logitech Proteus Core also has a core made from iron.
Under it there is the hexagonal metal core capsule which contains our adjustable weights. That’s why it’s called Proteus “Core”. It’s like the earth is under your palm, and the mouse actually gives that feeling.
A Little Info About The Cousin “Spectrum”
You must know that Logitech has launched a second mouse as a cousin to G502 Proteus Core in January 2016. It’s name is Proteus Spectrum and it differs fom Proteus Core in some aspects. Proteus Spectrum has the new lighting system and some newer blue highlights on itself. Actually it reminds me the Razer products and their new Chroma series with RGB illumnation system.
Proteus Spectrum comes with it’s new RGB lighting system with 16.8 million color spectrum. Else of the new illumination voodoo Proteus Spectrum has the same specifications with Proteus Core. I really can’t make a single recoommendation between them because they’re almost the same. But it may be wise to get Logitech Proteus Spectrum if you have other RGB gaming peripherals like keyboards and headsets. It makes a greaat combination when RGB lighted peripherals are used together. It will definetely match your set.

We now live in an era where a mouse shouldn’t only perform as a sports car, but should also look like a sports car! And this design field is pretty competitive. Now we can see around mice shaped like robots, cyber-punk cyborgs and any other thing that we can imagine.
As i said Logitech G502 is actually kind of a remake of the legendary Logitech G500 mouse which continues it’s supremacy. When you put Logitech G500 And G502 side by side and compare their features, you instantly understand that G502 is a modern upgrade of G500. Same concept, similar features, new design and some improved features.
If you are a Logitech user or at least had the chance to demonstrate some of Logitech mice, then you may be aware of Logitech’s smart design choices. Usually everythink is pre-thinked and designed for purpose if there’s a Logitech mouse.
As a major brand, Razer is known for their high performance mice with wide known ergonomics, at the other hand there are some brands which really spend some good amount of time on visual design and looks.
Logitech is like a good hybrid between design and performance. It provides you with great tracking quality and work performance while still looking like a badass.
The grip is kind of hybrid type which makes both palm grip users and claw grip users happy. The ergonomics of Logitech G502 suits great to palm grip and claw grip users. It is designed to be used by a wide user profle. So no matter if you’re a palm gip or claw grip, you will be more than fine with Logitech G502.
The mouse itself is a bit low on profile and gives the look of a sports car. Actually we can describe it as a sports car of mice. Damn, l like this simile.
The small thumb rest and grip for two outer fingers are textured to provide you better handling of the mouse and stability. It also gives your fingers this smooth touch which is something i really like about textured mice.
Optical Sensor With Surface Tuning
Logitech G502 has one of the best optical sensors in the market and there is plenty of user experience to prove it. 7.6 m/s tracking speed was promoted by Logitech itself, and some user conducted tests approve it. So it’s not a fake promotion, it’s actual reality.
It won’t be false to say that optical sensor of Logitech G502 is a killer of competition. It is rated as the best and most accurate sensor by many gamers, and as a person who had the chance to spend some time with Logitech G502 i can approve that. If you are planning to get a Logitech G502 you can be sure that it won’t let you down. What can i say anymore?? IT HAS PROBABLY THE BEST SENSOR!! Good sensor=Good Tracking Properties, Best Sensor=Best Tracking Properties. Pretty simple, right?
Have you heard anything like “Surface Tuning”? You may have not encountered with this kind of a thing before, but this option actually exists in some high-end gaming mice. The optical sensor actually demonstrates the surface which mouse works on and adapts itself to the surface.
This new sci-fi technology provides gamers a great comfort, especially to ones who are travelling or bringing their mouse anywhere they go.
Here’s a short guide on how to use the surface tuning feature:
There are several tests conducted on different mousepads of different brands, and all the time Logitech G502 is almost perfectly precise. The best thing about it is it’s simplicity. You just open the Logitech Gaming Software(LGS), click some buttons, move your mouse around and all the rest is done by Logitech G502 itself.
Lift off distance – I think you already know what lift off distance is, assuming that you’ve read our “What is a gaming mouse?” article. It’s the distance between your sensor(bottom of the mouse) and the surface higher which your sensor doesn’t sense movement and your cursor stops moving. It’s an important parameter when it comes to competitive gaming.
Another great feature of Logitech G502 is that Logitech Gaming Software while surface tuning automatically sets your lift off distance to a low lift off distance. But everyone can set their prefered parameters of course, what Logitech provides us with it’s peripherals and software is limitless!
As i mentioned, this tank has 11 programmable buttons which consist of left-right buttons, scroll button, forward, backward, DPI switch, profile switch, DPI up and down buttons. The switches for the main buttons are all Omron D2FC-F-7N.
Every buton is programmable via Logitech Gaming Software that you can even create profiles of your own for spesific games and situations. Logitech G502 supports infinite combinations of button profiles on your PC and up to 3 on-board profiles which you can bring anywhere you want with your mouse.
In order to create profiles with your own chosen commands you should have Logitech Gaming Software installed on your PC. But you can carry 3 chosen oboard profiles with your Logitech G502 anywhere you go. Click here to download Logitech Gaming Software.
There is a nice feature i like about the scroll wheel. It can press both right and left sides which is so damn comfortable and gives your hand some options. This is not a feature that you can find on a gaming mouse. I’ve seen this feature only on Razer Naga till now.
And scroll wheel also has the Hyper Scroll feature. Just with a single click you can switch your scroll wheel from “click-by-click” mode to “Hyper Scroll”. If you don’t know what’s the difference betwen Hyper Scroll and Click Scroll, let me explain it to you with a video. It is demonstrated on a Logitech G500, the predescor:
As you can see, the scrolling mode changes to hyper scroll with just one click and you can easily scroll down long web pages or documents. I’ve used another Logitech mouse with hyper scroll feaure a couple of years ago and i can’t describe the comfort it provides while scrolling down long documents.
Logitech G502 is one of the gaming mice in which I have seen one of the widest DPI range. You have the possibility to use the whole 200 – 12000 DPI range. And you can choose your prefered DPI from this wide spectrum. You can also switch your DPI in-game which gives you a wide range of oppurunities.
You can adjust 5 DPI levels of your own preference via Logitech Gaming Software and these DPI values can be anything in the 200-12000 DPI range. Be it precision sniping or lightning speed maneuvers.
Now you may ask if this high rate of DPI is necessary? Well, it’s actually depended on you. Some people prefer higher DPI and they want to be able to move their cursor further by little mpves, and some other people have their own sweet spot of DPI.
But there is one thing i know and it’s that you don’t need extremely high levels of DPI to achieve a comfortable gaming session. I highly advise you to read our article about it:
Adjustable weight is a feature which we can notice in many high end gaming mice, and Logitech G502 Proteus Core has every right to declare itself as a high end gaming mouse. It can even be nominated as president of gaming mice.
Proteus Core has 5 additional weights. Each of them weights 3,5 grams but that’s not all. Each weight has a triangular pointing form and are placed with a unique design. 3 of these weights form a hexagon when placed in the center of weight table, and other two are placed under the hexagon one after another.
You can place the weights by your own preferance and find your sweet spot to achieve maximum mouse handling quality. Proteus weights 140 grams with weights installed. 140 is the usual optimum number which is prefered by many gamers. Many quality gaming mice have their maximum weight set to 140 grams.
Where Can You Fınd It??
The best place for me to get a Logitech G502 was Amaon.com. Amazon users (Millions of people) know that you can find massive discounts at Amazon. I don’t even have to mention the quality of service and express delivery. It’s great to be able to have a source where you can connect with actual authority.
Last time i saw, the price for Logitech G502 Proteus Core was $67.39 on Amazon.com. You may find it for a cheaper price during discounts, so you may want to check it out often. Here is the link if you are planning to get a Logitech G502 Proteus Core
