So, I’ll shortly explain what we will discuss and what you will learn today to make your life better. You will, of course, learn what is a gaming mouse but not only that. Which means, we’re not going to learn just what a gaming mouse is. There’s more than that.

what is a gaming mouse

Most important of all, after reading this page you will know what kind of gaming mice exist, how do they differ, which parameters you should view while choosing one, how they differ for different kind of game styles and different hand grips and etc..

THIS IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF GAMING MICE

SO, SHOULD WE GET STARTED?? YEAH!

Let’s start with basics. I know that you all probably know what a “computer mouse” is, but there still may be some of our friends reading this page who aren’t that much informed. Let’s keep it short and give a tiny entry level information..

A computer mouse is an electronic device which acts as an interface tool between you and your computer. It gives you the ability to navigate through your screen and access via clicks to all the cool stuff that this new technology era has provided us.

If you’re using a desktop PC you’re probably using a mouse right now to click around and open stuff. That’s also how you opened this website seconds ago.

So, now let’s concentrate on our main question…

Question: WHAT THE HELL IS A “Gaming Mouse”???

Answer: Gaming mice are also computer mice, but they’re a little different then other classic $5 mice. They’re actually A LOT DIFFERENT  than other mice.

But how do they differ?? No need to mention that they have those BADASS looks. I mean, they look EXTRA COOL and EXTRA SMOOTH. They come with many different unique designs and this was probably one of the reasons why I’ve become a fethisist of gaming mice.

Looks at the video below. Have you ever seen something like this before?? These kind of mice are one of the reasns why I’ve become a fethisist of gaming mice.

And I know that you also get that goosebump feeling when you’re exploring those fine gaming mice. But under their cool looks lie many other parameters and details that really make the change. As they say, DEVIL’S IN THE DETAILS.

And today we’ll meet the devil, close encounter.. Now we’ll see how gaming mice differ from each other and how they’re categorized. Then we’ll learn how to choose the best gaming mice suitable for yourself.

Yeah, we know that there are way many different type of gaming mice around and sometimes it gets hard to choose between them. That’s why I’ve created a classification system of gaming mice. This way you will be able to categorize them and choose easily. I will also give you the ultimate tips which will make you choose the best suitable one for you. Stay tight…

what is a gaming mouse

Here is a system that I came up with to make all this gaming mice stuff easier and understandable. In order to get started, you’re going to ask some questions to yourself. You’ll take a paper and write down the answers to those questions that you’re going to ask to yourself. By answering these questions  you will eventually find out what you really want from a gaming mouse and what kind of a mouse you need. After that the only thing you have to do is to evaluate different mice which fall into your categories and pick them looking at their features. We will get to those questions just in a second, but first let’s get to know the features we usually spot on gaming mice.

Gaming mice have many different features and these features are the lines that seperate mice from each other. So, we may look for this combination of features that will aid us best during our gameplay or work session.

what is a gaming mouse

I’ve been around while evaluating different gaming mice and noticed that there are some specific features which you can spot on different kinds of gaming mice. These features are usually making the difference and will help you to get what you want out from a gaming mouse.  We will get to know them one by one, but we also should know the foundation of choosing a gaming mouse first. The foundation of choosing a gaming mouse is to know what you exactly want out of a gaming mouse. We will get to that shortly.

Here are the most common exclusive features that you may spot on many gaming mice:

Different Button Placement and Additional Buttons

High Quality Ergonomics

Grip Type

Sensor Quality

Price Range

Personal Customization

Adjustable DPI

Adjustable Weight

Wireless Use

Custom Lighting

Advanced Software

Durable Build

Material Quality

But in order to select the personal best from all the mice out there we must first get to know what we want from a gaming mouse. This is what you should determine first. Are you seeking a mouse for FPS/RPG or for a more specific field like MMO/MOBA?? Are you a comfortable gamer who focus only on the joy of the ride and doesn’t seek extreme performance to increase your frag and rank high on the score board?? Or are you all about over achieving??

Are you looking for a mouse but you’re on a budget?? There are price ranges that you can choose from. Do you want a mouse with significantly better ergonomics?? Perhaps you’re all about the looks and design, so you’re seeking a cyborg-like mouse. There definetely are mice like that.

So, you get the point.. First of all you must know what you really want from a gaming mouse. There are many kinds of gaming mice and you may get overwhelmed if you don’t know what you’re looking for. After you determine what you really want from a gaming mouse you can choose your mouse judging by their features which are menitioned above.

what is a gaming mouse

I’m trying to develop a path or let’s call a program which will make everything easier for you. Now we will determine which kind of mice you’re likely looking after.

Take a paper and write down the answers for questions below. Your answers will lead you to the type of mouse you want.

a) Are you on a budget? Or you want the best mice available for your money and you are pretty comfortable to spend bucks on them?

b) Are you a comfortable gamer? Or are you a hardcore gamer?

c) Are you a FPS/RPG player? Or are you a player of MMO/MOBA genre.

d) Do you seek badass ergonomics from a gaming mouse to make your long-hours gaming sessions?

d) Do you have big hands?? Or are they relatively small??

e) Do you want a wireless mouse? Or you don’t mind your desk covered with a cord?

After answering these major questions you will have a decent idea what kind of a mouse you want.

If you’re seeking a mouse but you’re on a budget, there are mice usually fall into category Under $50, Under $25, Under $100.

Comfortable Gaming

Comfortable gamers are usually people who play games for their personal joy. They don’t seek extreme achievments, ultra high frag rates or high rankings on the scoreboard. If you’re a comfortable gamer you won’t usually need extreme features like ultra high DPI or  top-notch professional features. Comfortable gamers prefer, as it’s mentioned, “comfort” during their game session. Mice for comfortable gamers better have good ergonomics, reachable button configuration and uncomplicated design features. IT SHOULDN’T MAKE YOU THINK. They also can be purchased for lower prices and make you save some bucks. They are friends of your budget.

Also you can use these mice not only for gaming, but for your usual daily tasks and they will actually aid you well. People who aren’t hardcore gamers but use gaming mice as all-purpose mice for all their tasks are extremely happy switching to a gaming mouse which are way more professional than usual $5 mice.

Hardcore Gaming

While hardcore gaming mice are usually maximized with features in order to achieve high performance. Usualy pro-gamers who take part in E-sports tournaments use this type of mice. If you watch  closely the e-sports athletes and concentrate on their mice you can see a wide range of pretty killer mice. These mice are fine tailored to provide high performance during dynamic gaming and they’re designed to make sure that you will get the job done when all the win or defeat is tied to a single mouse click which you have to accomplish in the right time and right place. Your victory can be a millisecond away and it’s all about that one shot you have to make. You can imagine the extremeness of them but this is what they’re designed for – HIGH PERFORMANCE.

I usually call these hardcore mice the “Creme de la Creme” of gaming mice. The best of the best. They are probably the best variants you can get for your money. They usually satisfy all their users. The only minus is that they can be relatively more pricey when compared to other usual mice.

FPS/RPG Mice

Actually almost every mouse can be used for FPS/RPG if you’re willing to. It doesn’t even have to be a gaming mouse in order to be a gaming mouse to play some Battlefield. But there are some specific mice that are tailored well for FPS/RPG gaming which come with built in features to make you one step ahead of others. Actually there are many mice which can suit you well in FPS/RPG gaming and they come in all sizes and all prices. This wide variety of available gaming mice gives us a lot of oppurtunity.

FPS/RPG mice usually come with ergonomic/comfortable design, on-the-fly DPI switch and multiple programmable buttons. Some of their high-end models have one-of-their-kind sensors customised for pro-gaming which eliminate mouse accleration and jittering. Best example for this kind of mouse is the legendary Logitech G502 . It’s my personal favourite and it’s also one of the best mice out there. I can comfortably say that it almost guarantees satisfaction. It’s also used by many pro-gamers in E-sports events. No wonder why.

what is a gaming mouse

MMO/MOBA Mice

MMO/MOBA mice are obviously dfferent from other mice with their general design. MMO/MOBA mice are customly designed for this specific genre of gaming and there are some exclusive features they have. MMO mice usually come with an extra 12-button grid under your thumb. Yeah, that’s right. 12 EXTA BUTTONS right under your thumb. There are so much buttons because MMO players usually play games that requires the usage of many items, spells, attacks and etc.. Think about World of Warcraft!! Sometimes there aren’t even enough place in the grids to place your shortcuts or you have a hard time to reach out to each one of them, you know what I’m talking about if you’re a MMO/MOBA gamer. Design of MMO mice is there to eliminate these specific problem.

MMO/MOBA mice are also designed pretty ergnomically. Actually, they are PRETTY DAMN ERGONOMIC AND COMFORTABLE because they aim to provide you comfort during your long hours of MMO gaming. We al know that people who play games like World of Warcraft or LoL/Dota are spending a decent amount of time in game. Extended hours of gaming can work against your wrist health if you don’t have an ergonomic gaming mouse. Carpal tunnel syndrome may occur with time if you spend a lot of time using PC/laptop without an ergonomic gaming mouse. Also wrist supports are items that I highly recommend to you.

what is a gaming mouse

Hand Size

Some people have large hands, some people have small. Also some mice are relatively big compored to others while some of them are small. That’s why it’s better to choose a mouse which matches to your hand size in.

what is a gaming mouse

Wireless/Wired Mice

Some people prefer wireless mouse because thy don’t like cords floating around. Actually I will admit that wireless mice are also a breath of fresh air.  The only thing about wireless mice are that sometimes their responsiveness can be lower than wired mice. That’s why pro or hardcore gamers don’t usually prefer wireless mice. Also users who got used to wired mice are a little skeptical that wireless mice will sometimes stop responding during gameplay and let you down. They’re actually right in some point because I used to have a wireless mouse and not frequently but once in a while it stopped responding and I had to reboot the mouse. That happened only once in a while but that is a no-no for a pro gamer especially if their vistory is tied to seconds. But does this mean that you should never use wireless mice?? NO.

There are many badass wireless mice out there you can get. Even some of them can be switched between wireless and wired. And they don’t even differ from wired mice when it comes to quality. Probably the best wireless mouse around is my personal favourite mouse Logitech G700S . It can be both wired and wireless. Also it has great technical specifications that won’t make you even think about another mouse. I don’t even have to mention the badass ergonomics and durable but smooth built.

So, these were the main questions that I ask myself before choosing a gaming mouse. First I determine WHAT I ACTUALLY WANT from a gaming mouse. After determining my needs then I check out what’s available. But I’m not just getting any mouse. I’m CHOOSING SMART. It’s all about choosing smart.

After you determine which kind of mouse you are looking for, you will check out our reviews here to evaluate and see whether that mouse is the one for you or not.

There are of course many mice that can give you extreme satisfaction without doubt. The category “Creme de la Creme” holds these kind of mice. They are maxed out and proudly sho themself with their exclusive design and technical qualities. But they can be pricey and not everyone may have the budget to afford these high-end mice. But if you have the money and you want to get an EPIC GAMING MOUSE that will support you well for a long time, then you can buy the “Best OF The Best” without doubt.

Now take a look at the paper you’ve written down the answers and see what you’ve written. Answers of these questions will shape your ideal gaming mouse. Now you know what kind of mice you want, so let’s get to know how the features I’ve listed above make the changes in gaming mice.

Let’s explain them

Different Button Placement and Additional Buttons

Gaming mice usually have additional buttons instead of standart mice wo just have two click buttons and a scroll wheel. Gaming mice have additional buttons to aid your gaming performance and these extra buttons are usually programmable. It means that you can assign macros (specific commands) to these additional buttons and use them in-game to make everything easier for you. As a simple example, you can assign a grenade throw to one of your extra mouse buttons. Doesn’t that sound sweet?? Yes it does.

High Quality Ergonomics

Ergonomics are one of the most important features of gaming mice. If you love comfort you should get a gaming mouse with quality ergnomic design. It also helps you to eliminate carpal tunnel syndrome. I also advice you to use a wrist support while using your mouse. Those little fluffy things you know what I mean.

Grip Type

There are 3 grip types of gaming mice. They are “Claw Grip”, “Palm Grip” and “Fingertip Gip”. Your grip style will depend on the design of gaming mouse + your hand size. You may have a specific type of grip prefence, so you may also evaluate the grip style of your mouse.

what is a gaming mouse

Sensor Quality

Some mouse seonsors are average quality, but some of them are tailored for extreme gaming and pro-quality. As an example, Logitech uses their signature Delta-Zero technology epic optical sensor in some of their mice. Logitech G502 is one of them and it’s also well known by its badass pro-gamer grade Delta Zero optical sensor. Some gaming mice really have exclusive sensors to provide you extreme performance.

Price Range

As I mentioned before, there are many awesome gaming mice around but not every one of them are affordable to ones who are limited to a budget. But being limited to a budget doesn’t mean that you can’t get a badass gaming mouse suitable for you. One of the main reasons behind the creation of gamingmiceplanet.com was to provide people with information and navigation to find their personal most suitable gaming mouse within their budget. There are many mice for many prices, but I prefer categorizing them with price tags “Under $25″, Under $50” and “Under $100”. You will find all you need here.

Personal Customization

Some mice are maxed out with customizatoin features. RAT mice series of MADCATZ are a great example for this category. Design customizations, weight customization, DPI, grip type… You name it. You will come across with many mice which fall into this category.

Adjustable DPI

Some of you who aren’t new to gaming mice industry may know what is DPI, but our new arriver friends may not have deep information about it. That’s why we’ve created these informative starters page. If you don’t know what is DPI and how it’s associated with gaming mice, then click here to read our article about DPI.

Adjustable Weight

Some mice come with additional weights you can place into them. Weights can provide you a different feeling of control over your mouse.  Weights come with multiple numbers, usually6 pieces in a pack what I see. Some people like their mice light, some like them heavy. Adjustable weights give you the ability to fine tune your mouse weight.

what is a gaming mouse

Wireless Use

If you don’t like cords around your PC/laptop you may prefer a wireless mouse. They’re great for mobilization and they have a wide range of available models. Some of them are more suitable for office use/daily tasks while some are made for hardcore gaming. There are even models which can be used both wireless and wired.

Custom Lighting

Some mice come with their custom lighting system. This is usually all about the looks but you can also customize lighting to indicate specific DPI levels or custom profiles.

Advanced Software

Gaming mice usually come with their own software which helps you customize your mouse with its user friendly interface. Some major manufacturers brought the game a step further with their uber-cool software which also has some brand-specific features ncluded. Razer Synapse and Logitech Gaming Software are good examples.

Durable Build

Some mice are built with exclusive quality in order to last long. Some mice like Logitech G series have an estimated lifespan of 20 million clicks and 250 km mice feet lifespan.
