SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

SteelSeries Rival 100 is a gaming mouse which is suitable mostly for comfortable gamers who don’t game on a hardcore or Professional level and also the suitable crowd for Rival 100 should be in a look for a mouse which won’t break their budget.

It’s also a GREAT gaming mouse for STARTERS!!! If you don’t have much experience with gaming mice and you want to get yourself your first decent professional gaming mouse, then you can start out with a SteelSeries Rival 100 (But personally I would prefer Rival 310). Its price is reasonably cheap for a professional gaming mouse manufactured by a brand like “SteelSeries”. And it has every feature that can give you a good launch in the gaming peripherals world!!

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

Its price is relatively low, quality is above average and it’s a pretty durable gaming mouse. An ideal gaming partner for the ones who are tired of the unsightly $5-10 non-durable gaming mice. If you’re looking for a high-quality, cheap and durable general purpose gaming mouse, BUY A RIVAL 100! It's a great long-term investment in a gaming mouse for comfortable gamers.

Design

SteelSeries Rival 100 is the kind of a gaming mouse that fulfills EVERY necessary basic function that a gaming mouse should and it’s a great gaming mouse for people who like minimalism. Rival 100 is pretty much one of the simplest and most minimalist high-tier gaming mice that you can come across in the gaming mice industry and it’s a great choice for comfortable gamers or people who start out with gaming mice.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

SteelSeries Rival 100 carries the features of  “Universal Design” which means that it’s designed for EVERYONE!!! During the design process of Rival 100 the idea of creating a gaming mouse which can be used comfortably by every gamer, no matter whether they have different hand sizes and grip preferations were kept as the main goal. At the end of this process, SteelSeries Rival 100 was born! A gaming mouse for the masses, no matter what their dissimilarities are.

The ergonomics of Rival 100 are designed in such a way that every gamer can find a sweet spot on the mouse for themselves. The Rival Series of SteelSeries are a little bit larger than usual gaming mice and that’s something that I really like. If you have large hands you probably will be very comfortable with a SteelSeries Rival mouse, including Rival 100.

SteelSeries Rival 100 ReviewAre you using a corded mouse like SteelSeries Rival 100?? Then you definitely should get a mouse bungee for good cable management and extra gaming comfort. CLICK HERE To Check Out The Best Mice Bungees You Can Get For Such Good Prices!!

When I tested out the Rival 100 putting my hands on this baby was just enough to get settled with it. I have average-large hands and I have long fingers but it didn’t even take much time for me to get used to the Rival 100. I used it with great ease as a claw grip-palm grip hybrid, using both grip styles from time to time because it was just around the “universal size”.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

But EVERYONE who is willing to use the Rival 100 can easily get acquainted with it in no time and every person, no matter you have small or large hands, you can find a sweet spot of ergonomics for yourself. People with an ultra large hand can use it as a fingertip grip and smaller hands will easy get buckled up with a smooth claw or grip.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

I said that SteelSeries Rival 100 was a minimalist mouse with a simplistic design. When we compare it with other high-end alien-technology looking gaming mice such as Logitech G900 it pretty much looks like stripped from its fancy clothes. That’s right, it’s as simple and as methodic as a decent gaming mouse can get and that’s not a bad thing!

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

I had a lot of fun using the Rival 100 because I DIDN’T HAVE TO THINK about all the buttons and settings and etc.. It was so easy to use. I mean, “just point and shoot” level of easy use.

By the way, SteelSeries Rival 100 is also equipped with the signature side grip which has a serrated surface to provide a better grip for gamers during extensive hours of gaming.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

SteelSeries’ Rival branch of gaming mice are actually meant for this specific purpose. Simplify the mouse layout, improve the ergonomics, BOOST OUT THE MOUSE PERFORMANCE and provide gamers a great time with their mice... These features and main concepts behind the Rival Gaming Mouse Series make Rival mice (and Rival 100 too) one of the BEST CHOICES for FPS / RPG / Shooter game genres.

SteelSeries Rival 100 has 6 macro programmable buttons on itself. The amount of buttons sometimes creates debates between gamers. Is it enough for gaming? Does it provide enough customization space??

Here is my personal opinion:

6 buttons of SteelSeries Rival 100 was MORE THAN ENOUGH for me, but you should also consider the fact that I was demonstrating it on usually FPS / RPG /SHOOTER games. I gamed a CS: GO and Call of Duty session with Rival 100  and everything was just as it supposed to be. The number of buttons was just about enough and well optimized for swapping weapons, throwing grenades, shifting DPI and etc.. The general concept of almost all FPS / RPG / SHOOTER games are similar, so it won’t be hard to guess and evaluate my words considering your favorite and most frequently played games.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

But this demonstration was on FPS / SHOOTER genre and Rival series mice perform the best on these specific genres – they’re designed for these genres. If you’re going to play MMO / MOBA or any other game that would require you to assign much more macros than 6 buttons, then you might check out some other gaming mice such as UTechSmart Venus. If you’re going to need extensive amounts of macros to store your potions and spells and etc, then you better check out another mouse on our website from the Mice Section.

But if you’re gaming with fast-paced action/shooter games, then SteelSeries Rival 100 is a good option to consider.

The surface of Rival 100 is made out of soft-touch black material and the colors are glossy. My hand actually felt pretty good on the soft touch material surface. SteelSeries never lets me down when it comes to materials design.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

The only significant minus about the design that I can express is that SteelSeries Rival 100 is a “right hand only” gaming mouse and that’s why our left-handed mutant friends may have to search out another gaming mouse for themselves unless they’re used to operate a mouse with both their right and left hands. Sorry guys, this isn’t my fault. You can always send hateful complaint letters to the SteelSeries executive team 🙂

It also would be a sin not to mention that SteelSeries produces one of the most durable gaming mice such as other other top-notch gaming mice manufacturers such as Logitech and Razer and etc.. SteelSeries Rival 100 comes with a button durability of 30 MILLION CLICKS LIFESPAN!!! It’s no doubt a great investment for gamers who plan on keeping their high-quality mice near for a long time....SteelSeries Rival 310 EVEN HAS MORE durable clicks with 50 MILLON CLICKS lifespan!! IT’S HUGE!!!

SteelSeries Rival 310 is the updated higher-grade version of Rival 110 and you better check it out before buying Rival 100. You may change your mind 😉

Yeah, the mouse is extra durable and that’s how SteelSeries roll. Every Steelseries mouse that I’ve tried out was ultra-durable and they actually made me feel the quality underlying the mouse. So, if you want a durable mouse which will be together with you even during the days when you have the blues, then Rival 100 or higher SteelSeries mice are a good way to go.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

SteelSeries Rival 100 also has RGB color spectrum illumination. It has two-zone illumination which are the rear SteelSeries Logo and the scroll wheel light. But unlike the epic Rival 310, Rival 100 has relatively downgraded features. Rival 100 has only one-type illumination customization option. The rear logo and scroll wheel light can with only the same illumination colors and animations while with Rival 310 you can set them up to illuminate with different colors independently from each other.

Now that we have explored all the general design features of Rival 100, let’s talk about the inner sides and technical subjects of SteelSeries Rival 100.

Technical Side of Things

SteelSeries Rival 100 is pretty satisfying for a “beginner-level” mice. To be honest, it’s not the BEST OF THE BEST, there are WAY BETTER gaming mice which come with better sensors and better technical parameters, but for the low price, this is one of the BEST setups that you can get. A dream for the comfortable gamer.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

SteelSeries Rival 100 comes with the integrated Avago SDNS-3059-SS Optical Gaming Sensor. It’s an exclusive SteelSeries sensor which is the outcome of a collaboration with the industry known sensor manufacturer Pixart. SDNS-3059-SS is the end result of development based on the feedbacks from global teams, gamers and collaborating work partners.

Here is a video demonstration of the Avago SDNS-3059-SS Optical Sensor on a CS: GO session. It's pretty impressive...

Exclusive SteelSeries sensor performs pretty impressively, especially in the 200 – 2000 CPI diapason. The 200 – 2000 CPI range gives almost silky smooth results and it’s giving me a pretty good time because I usually play around the optimum 1800 – 2500 CPI range. The only minus about the DPI levels is that it can only be set to 4000 DPI after 2000 DPI threshold. 250 CPI step increments are good as minimum steps but it would be nice to be able to set up some value between 2000 -4000 DPI.

And I must tell the truth, there is a little bit of noticeable jitter as you approach the 4000 CPI Max limit. That's a common thing with gaming mice and their sensors. Almost every sensor jitters a little bit as you approach ultra high CPI levels. But the jitter is not that significant and it’s not really noticeable. You probably won’t even feel any jitter especially during high speeds of mouse movement during fast-paced games.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

The mouse sensor performs really well overall and it gets the job done pretty efficiently. There are of course way better mouse sensors, but for the price and other features considered in general, it’s right around the optimum performance. If you want better performing mouse sensors which even Esports players use during tournaments, CHECK OUT our SteelSeries Rival 310 Review.

There are 2 DPI levels that you can shift between and they’re adjustable through the SteelSeriesEngine3 Software. This is one of the features that I’m not fully satisfied with. I used to play with more switchable DPI levels – around 5 of them. I don’t have any problem playing with 2 DPI levels but I’m more comfortable with AT LEAST 3 CPI levels to choose from. It would have been better if there were more CPI level options, but it’s probably enough for many people. About this topic, I leave the comments to you people because this is a matter of personal preference.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

I had the chance to demonstrate the epic Corsair Glaive RGB and it TOTALLY left me satisfied with a smile on my face. It’s one of the BEST GAMING MICE for FPS / RPG /SHOOTER and I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND getting a Corsair Glaive RGB if you are a gamer who usually plays these specific game types. 5 DPI levels to shift through, 3 modular ergonomic thumb rests and many more!!

As I said before, SteelSeries Rival 100 is equipped with high-quality 30 Million Click lifespan switches which will take long long miles with you. These switches may last longer even than you 🙂 The switches are nothing extra special, but they perform good and for a quality gaming mouse with a price tag this low it’s probably one of the best alternatives that you can get.

I used WAY BETTER gaming mice when compared with Rival 100 and experienced the feel of extra high-quality switches. There are of course much better mice equipped with top-notch switches, but SteelSeries Rival 100 left me pretty satisfied and for the price, it definitely does more than you pay.

Software

SteelSeries Rival 100 uses the good old SteelSeriesEngine 3 (SSE3) which is one of my favorite gaming mice and peripherals software due to its user-friendliness, simplicity and neatly designed game compatibility / extra customization features. It definitely does more than only customizing your mouse settings.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

I have to admit that Rival 100 is the lowest grade member of the SteelSeries Rival family and that’s why it comes with less stuff to customize. Other higher-grade Rival mice come with more customizable technical features and eye-candy gizmo. Rival 100 is more simplistic, but you will STILL get to program this baby in the exact way you want.

The best thing about the software is that it’s SO EASY TO USE. A gaming mouse probably couldn’t be easier to use and that’s one of the reasons for my high rating. You can easily assign macros and program your buttons in the way you want. 6 buttons at your service, optimize them for the best outcome!!!

Else of the buttons, you can assign 2 levels of CPI from the 1-4000 diapason. You can adjust the acceleration/deceleration, polling rate, and angle snapping. The Fundamentals of a gaming mouse and they’re all customizable in SteelSeries Rival 100 to suit your needs.

The feature that has AMAZED ME the most is the SteelSeries GameSense!!! It’s the SteelSeries extension which allows you to customize your mouse through RGB lighting for each specific game event, be it CS: GO, be it DOTA 2, or anything else. You can adjust your RGB lights to act differently during game events like headshots, killstreaks and etc..

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

You can also adjust by GameSense your lights to indicate your health level by RGB lights. You can assign a gradient of desired colors to indicate your MAX and MIN health. Your rear logo and scroll Wheel light will change depending on your current health level. And this feature can be applied to MANY MORE game events, not only health. Be it armor, be it round kills and etc.. During a CS: GO session it’s really cool to be able to track your health just by taking a quick nod at your mouse lights, believe me 🙂

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review

Also, an additional cool feature of Rival 100 is that you can save your mouse settings inside the mouse profile, which is stored inside the brain (processor) of Rival 100. This way you will be able to carry your Rival 100 wherever you want and you won’t lose your settings while operating on another computer. Softwareless operation and this comes really handy especially for ESports events and LAN parties!!!

These were pretty much the features that SteelSeries Software can provide to you. Now that you know EVERYTHING about SteelSeries Rival 100, you probably have already determined whether it’s the mouse for you or not. If you feel like you need to have the Rival 100 by your side as your next favorite weapon then you should know the best place to buy it. And that’s what I’m going to give you 🙂

Where To Buy It From??

The best and easiest place to buy it is from Amazon. I’ve bought probably all my gaming peripherals through Amazon and I’m much more than delighted with the service. I spot the BEST PRICES usually on Amazon (95% of the time). And I don’t need to tell that the retail service and customer care are GREAT.Amazon has never let me down and you probably are aware of their quality if you are an Amazon user.

SteelSeries Rival 100 goes with a price tag of $29.99 at the moment. It’s a GREAT price for a quality gaming mouse from a well-known brand like Steelseries. The price can even lower down with time and you may come across some great discounts on Amazon from time to time. That’s why I advise checking it out often. SteelSeries Rival 100 has a rating of 4.2 out of 5 at Amazon. That’s a good rating and definitely tells us that more than 4 people out of 5 (or more than 80% of the real users) are satisfied with Rival 100. It’s also the “Amazon’s Choice” in its own category.

Unfortunately for me as a gamer I started in the console realm. Xbox and Halo was my pretty much best hobby back then to this date I am still attached to Halo for their soundtracks, but if I was a pc gamer in the past I would probably be playing Ghost Recon, and Counterstrike!

    • Tyler says:

      Hey Erick!!

Our stories are actually quiet the same. I also sarted out as a console gamer when I was a child, then I’ve parallelly started to game on PC too. I love both of them, can’t be really comparing one to another.

  2. JohnB says:

Being a gamer myself, I had bought a $30 gaming mouse and it’s working perfectly for more than 2 years now. DPI up to 4000 is ideal, I do not see anyone needing more than that. However, if I would buy a gaming mouse now I would definitely buy the new Razer Basilisk. For just $30 more you get a heck lot in return for your money. But I agree that for Steel Series offers great mice which are both affordable and do what they promise.
